Studies have been done on the answers IRS staff give on their help lines. Over 70% wrong answers is a quite common result. They make mistakes all the time – it’s inevitable with so many tens of millions of personal, corporate, estate, and other taxes being filed every year. However, if they goof and overpay you, you are on the hook for repayment! Yet another reason why nobody should ever plan to spend a tax refund immediately. ALWAYS put a tax refund check into savings for your Future Fund, reserves for upcoming expenses, etc. Double check to ensure it was what you expected, and then still keep it in savings awhile just-in-case.

Not as much as people hope they do,
If you know your refund check is too large or you got someone else’s refund, RETURN it. Returning it before 4/15/2010 or as quickly as possible is the ONLY way to avoid penalties and interest.
